Quick Facts

Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

The massive buildings and wharves that house Fort Mason Center once stored army supplies and provided dock space for army ships. Started in 1912 and completed 3 years later, the army constructed the Port of Embarkation (SFPE) to send troops and supplies to an increasing number of US bases in the Pacific, including Hawaii and the Philippines. The SFPE became the physical embodiment of the US' growing supremacy as a new superpower.

During WWII, over 1.6 million troops and 23 million tons of supplies were shipped out to the Pacific Theater of Operations from these wharves.
