This trailhead orientation panel shows a map and images of the Redwood Mountain Trail area.
The Redwood Mountain Trail is 9.5 mile loop (15 km) at a moderate incline. It takes you along the ridge above Redwood Canyon for spectacular views as well as along the canyon floor among the trees. The trail is lightly used, so you may be able to experience solitude on this hike.
Relatively few people visit the Redwood Mountain sequoia grove. The trails take you along the ridge above Redwood Canyon for spectacular views as well as along the canyon floor among the trees. The trailhead is two miles from Highway 180 down a sometimes rough, unpaved road; take it slowly. Once you arrive, you can take a short walk or an overnight trip (for overnights a wilderness permit is required).
Redwood Mountain Grove, Post-Fire: What to Expect
This grove burned in the 2021 KNP Complex Fire. Forty percent of the grove burned at moderate to high fire severity, and many giant sequoias were killed.
Redwood Mountain Grove is a very large grove noted for its old growth sequoias and diversity of other plants. In the spring, wildflowers are a highlight both along the ridge trail and along Redwood Creek. In the fall, the dogwood shrubs turn a deep red color, and the fall light provides good photo opportunities. Visitors to this grove will see evidence of wildfire in fire-killed trees, more open forests, and we hope, giant sequoia seedling regeneration as well as re-sprouting wildflowers and shrubs.
