Tribal Medallion

Visitors with a stroller walk next to a large bronze circular plaque set in the center of an open, concrete court area. The bronze plaque is decorated with an image of the canyon and a traditional southwestern petroglyph-style hand in the center. Surrounding the plaque is a large sun motif etched into the cement, along with the names of eleven local Native American tribes. Large, looming pieces of white-tan limestone encircle the court.
The medallion reminds us of the thousands of years of human connections to Grand Canyon.

Quick Facts

Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

The canyon has been a site of value, beauty, adventure, peace, and even home far longer than it has been a national park. For thousands of years the canyon has sustained a wide variety of cultures and people as each in turn claimed it as their own and grew to know and love its gifts and challenges.

This medallion recognizes and honors the 11 Traditionally Associated Tribes that have known the canyon as a home and provider as well as site of continued cultural importance to this day.
