Quick Facts

Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

In 1988, a blue whale washed up on Ocean Beach. The carcass was cut into three pieces and buried in the sand. More than five years passed until the remains, now a cleaned-up skeleton, were dug up. Today the bones are on display here in the Headlands. They are arranged inside an outline of a whale to give a sense of size and shape to these wondrous underwater behemoths.
