A Tumbling Cascade Wayside

Sable Falls is an example of a "cascade" waterfall -- one that flows downhill over ledges or short cliffs like a series of steps.
The kind of rock that water flows over and how it erodes helps shape the way a waterfall looks. Sable Falls tumbles 75 feet over sandstone of varying hardness on its way to Lake Superior. Some of this rock is estimated to be at least 1 billion years old!
All Shapes and Sizes
There are a wide variety of waterfalls throughout the park. Some are large, plunging waterfalls, like Munising Falls at the western end of the park. Others are small, unnamed trickles.
