Battery Number 5 project out as a salient from the Confederate defense lines east of Petersburg; it contained four guns. General Smith's (USA) XVIII Corps advanced attacked General Beauregard's forces (Confederate) here at 7:00 p.m. on June 15, 1864. In two hours of fighting, the U.S. Forces opened up a 1.5-mile-long hole in the Dimmock Line.
