In 1993, a photographer named Jim Carney and his friend Steve Gasman stopped at Conata Picnic Ground for lunch. Afterwards, they decided to explore the area, and Mr. Carney found some bones exposed just off the edge of the road. He took a photo of his find and reported the discovery to park staff. The project to excavate this became known as the Pig Dig.
