Located in the heart of the former Carlisle Indian Boarding School campus, the Wheelock Bandstand is named for composer Dennison Wheelock, who attended the school and became the first Native American (Oneida) bandmaster of the renowned Carlisle Indian School Band. The current bandstand was built in 1980.

The school’s founder, R.H. Pratt, was referred to by students as “the man on the bandstand,” as he and other staff could often be found on the steps of the bandstand, which stood in the heart of the campus, observing students.
