Built in 1884, the Commissary Storehouse would serve as the warehouse for the army’s food rations at Fort Laramie. The storehouse would be operated by a Commissary sergeant and a Lieutenant.Supplies stored in the Commissary included salt pork and salt beef packed in 200lb barrels, hams wrapped in oil cloth, potatoes, onions, bacon, and hardtack. Soldiers and officers could purchase rations in addition to those they were issued. After 1890, the Commissary Storehouse would serve as a horse barn and a storeroom for Sheridan Coal Company. Currently the building serves as the Visitor Center and Park Administration.
