Quick Facts
Location:
Beverly, MA
Significance:
Olmsted Designed Estate
MANAGED BY:
Private Estate
From 1881 to 1884, Frederick Law Olmsted Sr. and John Charles Olmsted designed the private estate of Ephraim W Gurney in Beverly, Massachusetts. Due to Gurney’s unexpected death, the project was never finished, though the property still reflects features of Olmsted’s original plan. The most significant feature left over is the retaining wall, which separated the house from the nearby steep hillside. This was a necessary addition to help protect the wilderness of the estate and strengthen the planting plan.
