Fort Matanzas National Monument preserves the fortified coquina watchtower, completed in 1742, which defended the southern approach to the Spanish military settlement of St. Augustine.  It was often staffed by seven to ten soldiers, that left St. Augustine for one month of work at the watchtower.  The National Park Service operates a free ferry service to the fort daily.  The first is at 9:30, and the last is at 3:30.  Each tour includes a ranger led presentation about the fort's story.  To take this tour, stop in the park's visitor center for a boarding pass.
