Historic St. Mary’s City sits along a tributary of the Potomac River in St. Mary’s County, MD and preserves the site of the first European colonization in Maryland. Though the site is the first permanent settlement in Maryland, Historic St. Mary’s is the fourth settlement in North America by British colonizers.

The living outdoor museum recounts and explores the history of the English colonizers that first sailed to the region as well as the history of the Yaocomaco that lived on the land first. This history is explored through exhibits, walking trails, active archaeological digs, school programs and more.
