Quick Facts

Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

Howison Hill, named for the Howison family that lived nearby, was an artillery position during the battle of Fredericksburg.

Lee utilized the high hills west of Fredericksburg for his defenses, giving his artillery clear views of the oncoming Federal troops. Citizens also used the heights to observe the battle, hoping that their homes would not be destroyed in the chaos. Before and during the Battle of Fredericksburg the residents of the town fled town to ensure their personal safety. But then they watched and listened to the troop movements and actions. They would wait until the battle was over to return to their homes, if they had homes to return to.
