The John Quincy Adams Birthplace was originally built by Samuel Belcher in the mid-1600s. Like the John Adams Birthplace, it was of framed construction with four rooms and a central chimney. A lean-to later added to the back gave it the classic New England “salt-box” shape it has today.

Deacon John Adams, father of John Adams, purchased this home and the surrounding land in 1744. He rented it out to tenants. When Deacon John died in 1761, his son John Adams inherited the property. He moved into the home in 1764 with his new bride, Abigail. In this house, she gave birth to their children, including John Quincy Adams, born on the second floor in 1767. The young family saw the start and spread of the American Revolution in this home. The couple lived in the home with their children and servants off and on until 1784, when Abigail left to join John in Europe. At that point, Phoebe Abdee and her family moved into the house to take care of it while the Adamses were abroad. Phoebe Abdee had been formerly enslaved by Abigail’s father, William Smith.

John Quincy Adams purchased the property from his father in 1803. He lived in his childhood home with his wife, Louisa Catherine, and young children for several summers.

The John Quincy Adams birthplace is open seasonally. Interior access is by ranger-led guided tours or self-guided tours. An entrance pass is required to go inside the building.
