Situated on the Southern flank of Kauhakō Crater within Makanalua ahupuaʻa lies Kahaloko Cemetery. This site is one of the older cemeteries associated with the Hansen’s Disease settlement. Based on the dates of marked headstones within the cemetery boundaries, Kahaloko was likely used from 1887-1921.

For many years, Kahaloko cemetery was overgrown with a dense thicket of invasive trees and bushes. Vegetation like Christmasberry, lantana, and java plum, covered grave sites. Park rangers initiated various grave marker preservation projects to preserve the integrity of the grave markers that dot the cemetery grounds. Thanks to the efforts of park rangers, Kahaloko has been nearly cleared of the dense vegetation that impeded access and damaged the grave sites.
