The Longfellows built this carriage house in 1844, replacing earlier outbuilding structures. The interior was signifcantly altered in about 1890 by the Boston firm of Longfellow, Alden, & Harlow, and in 1904 the west wing was extended northward.

The Carriage House has served a multitude of domestic functions throughout its history, providing shelter for the Longfellows' carriages and horses and later as a garage for Alice Longfellow's Rolls Royce automobile. Today it is used by the park to host lectures and visitor events.
