President Martin Van Buren passed away on July 24, 1862 a few months shy of his 80th birthday. His funeral was held at the Reformed Dutch Church in Kinderhook with burial in the church cemetery where he joined his wife Hannah and son, Martin Van Buren Jr. in the same plot. Van Buren's roughly 15-foot tall granite obelisk is surrounded each December 5th for a ceremony celebrating his life. The cemetery is open sunrise to sunset throughout the year.
