Quick Facts

Cold Spring, NY
Significance:
Olmsted Designed Estate
MANAGED BY:
Privately Owned
Named after a village in Scotland, Olmsted Brothers worked to enhance the landscape of Nethermuir in 1906 by introducing a substantial regrading plan for the steep terrain, rearranging trees to provide a sense of privacy, and creating lawns and gardens. Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., with the assistance of Edward Clark Whiting, designed large stone enclosing walls, which they draped with plants and vines. Today, diverse tree groupings, with some mature trees, remain on the site, which was acquired by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory by the 1990s.
