Although this building has been repurposed many times, it began as the first Town House of Lowell, meaning that it was where town meetings took place. Specifically, the second floor had a large hall designed for this purpose. In 1836, Lowell became a city and no longer held town meetings, but the hall was still used for public events. For example, Abraham Lincoln gave a speech there in 1848. In addition to being Lowell’s City Hall, it also housed the first city library in the nation, which opened in 1845. Yet by 1893, the new City Hall was built and completed so in 1896, Old City Hall was privately owned and remodeled. Though meetings are no longer held in the building, it holds a vibrant and important history.
