Occurring in a glacial depression, Orono Bog is a classic, northern sphagnum bog. It illustrates zonation of flora from lowland and bog to upland forest. It is uniquely accessible to the public and for teaching and research purposes.

The bog has a 1-mile boardwalk loop created jointly between the University of Maine, City of Bangor, Maine, and the Orono Land Trust. Informational waysides along the way help provide context to his unique bog ecosystem.
