In early years, miners climbed ladders to and from their work sites underground. Being both grueling and dangerous, Quincy installed a man engine. This mechanical ladder system proved useful and efficient but was abandoned in the early 1890s due to the depth of Quincy. The shaft is now capped with a "bat-friendly" enclosure, one of two on the Quincy site.
