21. Sophia's Grave
Forgotten founding father Albert Gallatin met his first wife Sophia Allegre at her mother's boarding house where he would stay when visiting Richmond. Sophia's mother did not approve of the developing relationship between Sophia and Albert, mainly because she had already lost one daughter to a Frenchman, and she didn't want to lose her only remaining daughter.
Despite Mrs. Allegre's objections, Sophia and Albert are wed in May 1789 and move to Friendship Hill to settle in wedded bliss. Unfortunately, Sophia will die in October. Gallatin mourned her greatly and could not bear remaining at Friendship Hill with her memories. He will not even speak of her, and considers returning to Geneva.
There is no record of what Sophia died from. Gallatin would not speak of it. He did, however, keep meticulous household records and there is a record of a doctor and midwife visiting around that time. Based on this very sparse information, we can speculate that perhaps she miscarried or had some female malady. It is just as likely that she fell down the stairs or was thrown off a horse.
We believe that this is the final resting place of Sophia. Gallatin will write that he buried his beloved wife overlooking the river, which is not viewable from the graveside. The short wall built around the site was added by a later owner. It is speculated when the additions were added to either end of the property that perhaps they uncovered Sophia's remains and re-interred her at the current location. We have no way of knowing definitively that this site is the final resting site of Sophia, but we are able to honor her memory by respecting this site as though it is. Because of the tree roots around, ground penetrating radar would not allow us to verify if there is a body buried there.
From Sophia's Grave, you can continue along as much or little of our ten mile trail system as you want to hike. There are many things to see along the trails including wildlife, plants and the Clare cemetery. Stop at the Visitor Center to grab a trail map!
