14. Stone Kitchen

This stone structure replacing the log kitchen was added in 1824 and is the final addition during Gallatin's ownership. Like today, the kitchen was the heart of the home and a hub of activity through the day. At one point this was even used as the Visitor Center!

A unique feature of this room is that there is a modern building encapsulating the historic structure. In 1978, as the ownership was changing hands to the National Park Service, there were a series of arson fires on the property. The damage was extensive, but allowed an opportunity to see the stone, brick and frameĀ building features all together.

The Gallatin family had many servants, but Gallatin was a staunch abolitionist. He did purchase one slave, but immediately changed her to an indentured servant. At the end of her contract, she chose to stay with the Gallatins.
