Scenic View/Photo Spot

Black Rock Canyon gets its name from the main color in this metamorphic rock. It is called Pinto Gneiss (pronounced “nice) and is estimated to be more than 1.8 billion years old. Look closely to observe intricate banding and mineral crystals in the rock. Exposed rock is excellent habitat for lichens, several species of which can be observed on this outcropping. Look for bright splotches of green, orange, and yellow growing on the rocks. Different species can be identified by color and shape.
