The Grand Staircase
One ascends thirty-nine steps of the staircase, climbing 22 feet to reach the second floor. The four-inch rise of each step was a design feature that ensured the Vanderbilts and their guests could navigate the flight with ease and poise—making grand entrances and exits, without tripping over their elaborate costuming.
