The ruins of the Willis Church parsonage, located on the northern slope of Malvern Hill, found themselves at the center of the action on July 1st. Confederate artillery tried to take up positions in the nearby fields, while General Lee observed the battle from a blacksmith shop just across from the church. What remains of the parsonage today—mainly a pair of brick chimneys—once marked the staging ground for Confederate forces in their final attempt to crush McClellan’s Army of the Potomac before it could retreat to the safety of Union gunboats on the James River.
