Description

Legends don't come close to capturing the incredble story of the coyote. In the face of centuries of annihilation campaigns which included the deploying of gases from helicopters and engineered epidemics, coyotes didn't just survive, they thrived, expanding across the continent from Alaska to New York. In the war between humans and coyotes, coyotes have won hands down.

Petroglyph National Monument and Western National Parks Association invite you to meet Dan Flores, author of Coyote America, a natural history about the five-million-year biological story of the magnificent coyote. Dan will trace the coyote's cultural evolution from a preeminent spot in Native American religions to the hapless foil of the Road Runner cartoon series.

About the author: Dan Flores is a writer and Professor Emeritus of the History of the American West at the University of Montana. A native of Louisana and currently a resident of Santa Fe, he has written for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, and magazines such as New Mexico Magazine and Texas Monthly. Coyote America was a New York Times Bestseller, winner of the Sigurd Olson Nature Writing Award, and a 2017 Finalist for PEN America's E. O. Wilson Prize in Literary Science Writing.

This presentation will take place at Petroglyph's Information Center Outdoor Patio. Please park in the Information Center's parking lot then walk 100 yards north on a paved sidewalk to the patio. Bench seating is provided however you may bring a seat pad to sit on or your favorite chair. Bring water, apply sunscreen, and wear a hat if you are sensitive to the sun.
