Description
We're excited and honored to have Mercedese Young Man Afraid Of His Horses at the monument this month demonstrating her incredible talent! Here's a little more information about Mercedese in her own words:
"My English name is Mercedese Young Man Afraid Of His Horses. My Lakota name is Čiśtila Waša’ka Win or Little Strong Woman. I was born and raised in Oglala on the Pine Ridge Reservation, in South Dakota. I’m enrolled in the Oglala Lakota Sioux Tribe. I’m also Huńkpapa and Ohénuńpa Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Ihañktuwañ Dakota from grandparents on both sides of my family lineage. My parents are Davidica Little Spotted Horse and Wendell Young Man Afraid Of His Horses Jr. I come from the ŚiTańka or Big Foot Tiyošpayé (family).
I’ll be a Senior at the University of Minnesota Morris this coming fall. I’ve been a wacipi or powwow dancer since I was 2 years old. I dance women’s traditional, jingle dress, fancy shawl, hat and boot dance, and switch dance. I’ve been beading since I was 11, and been making many forms of traditional art since. I’ve presented and performed almost all over the US for historical sites, events and at powwows with my family and on my own. I have a deep love for history, education, traditional art, dancing, language revitalization and reclamation of culture and ancestral life ways. Wopila tańka! (Big thank you!)"
Come by the visitor center between May 25th and May 31st to learn more from Mercedese about her art and cultural traditions!
