Description
New Orleans JAZZ NHP's Song o' the Day:
"Blueberry Hill"
What the Hill? How is Richard “Piano” Scott’s rendition of a song written for a 1940 Gene Autry movie pertinent to this date? That Blueberry Hill has been climbed and recorded by “every artist” from Glenn Miller to Louis Armstrong to Elvis Presley to the Beach Boys, and even Happy Days’ Ritchie Cunningham burst into a refrain whenever he managed to procure a date! But one particular artist stands upon that summit above all others – New Orleans’ own Fats Domino!
In 1949, Dave Bartholomew brought Antoine Domino to Cosimo Matassa’s J&M Studio to record “The Fat Man” and “It launched both Domino’s career and the “golden age” of New Orleans R&B, reportedly selling 10,000 copies in 10 days in New Orleans alone before breaking nationally in January 1950. For the next decade, Domino used J&M and later Cosimo Studios to create his string of chart-topping national hits.” (64 Parishes) And today, April 14th, is the day that Cosimo Matassa was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. The following year he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, too.
So today we play Richard’s version of a song for which Fats’ is remembered after being discovered by Dave and recorded by Cosimo, who so much influenced New Orleans music. Thank you, Mr. Matassa.
