Description
Please join us for a flag ceremony and reflections as we acknowledge the 191st anniversary of the death of James Monroe and the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Liberia and explore the successes and challenges in revolutionary ideas of freedom, justice, and liberty in the making of the United States of America.
18th and 19th Century world history is often characterized as the "age of revolution" as new republics formed around the world. On January 7, 1822, the Republic of Liberia was founded and settled by freedmen and women from the United States who had been enslaved. Join us as we explore the complicated history of economics, freedom, and power as social issues presenting a "problem" in 19th century US and abroad, resulted in an effort to colonize freed Blacks in Africa and Central America. The Republics of Sierra Leone and Liberia were of the early landscapes identified by the American Colonization Society as viable places for government sanctioned relocation of Africans and their descendants. Modeled after the US, Liberia's founding was sovereign and led by President James Monroe. Several presidents supported the idea and effort of African recolonization including Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Abraham Lincoln.
