Description

The National Park Service is partnering with Arlington Country Parks and Recreation on a joint program at Fort C.F. Smith.

The program will include a hike* from Fort C.F. Smith to Spout Run. The remnants of a battery that overlooked Spout Run is the only surviving earthwork associated with Fort Strong. Fort Strong, originally known as Fort De Kalb, once acted as the northern flank of the Arlington Line fortifications. With the construction of Fort C.F. Smith to the north in early 1863, the two forts blocked the last open approach from Virginia to the Aqueduct Bridge. The Spout Run Battery is just a 25-minute walk from Fort C.F. Smith Park, thanks to the nearby Custis Bike Trail. The total distance will be 2.5 miles.

*Hike Level: Moderate (A moderate hike is generally suitable for novice hikers who want a bit of a challenge. The terrain will involve a moderate incline and may have some steeper sections. Generally 3 to 5 mile)
The program will begin at Fort C.F. Smith Park.

The program will start at Fort C.F. Smith Park.
