Description
Salem is a city deeply tied to its history. But whose history is told and whose is forgotten?
Join park rangers to explore historic Salem through the voices of Sabe and Rose - two enslaved and later free people connected to the Derby family of Salem.
Sabe and Rose lived, labored, loved, and resisted oppression in Salem at the turn of the 19th century. Their stories help us understand the experiences of the first generation of people transitioning from enslaved to free in Massachusetts. This walking tour uses primary source documents to trace their lives across different locations in downtown Salem.
This tour will begin outside of Waite & Peirce (193 Derby Street, Salem). The tour takes place outdoors and travels approximately 3/4 of a mile, occasionally over uneven surfaces.
