Description
In May of 1781 American Patriot forces led by Francis Marion, better known as the Swamp Fox, and Lt. Colonel Henry "Lighthorse Harry" Lee, laid siege to the British outpost of Fort Motte on the hills overlooking the Congaree River and the important river crossing of McCord's Ferry. This six day siege would be one of the pivotal military actions in the strategy of Maj. General Nathanael Greene's "War of Posts" to push out the British forces that occupied the South Carolina backcountry once and for all.
Join Park Ranger Jon Manchester for a guided hike down the historic McCord's Ferry Road to learn more about this little known yet pivotal military action of the Revolutionary War that helped to secure independence for the United States. This two mile guided hike will take participants through the moments leading up to and following this battle, as well as look at the people who played important roles in this historic event, both military and civilian.
