Description
From August 3-7, 2021, collegiate solar car teams will compete in the American Solar Challenge along portions of the Santa Fe Trail in commemoration of the Trail’s Bicentennial. You’re invited to join in the fun! The event is free and open to the public.
Solar cars are expected to arrive periodically at Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site approximately 3:00 pm on August 4, 2021, until approximately 5:00 pm on August 5, 2021.
The tentative schedule for arrival of solar cars at Bent's Old Fort (difficult to predict exact times):
- August 4:
- 3:45 – 5:30 pm
- August 5 (most solar cars arriving this day)
- 9:00 am – 3:15 pm
Folks who love cars, want to support students' ingenuity, enjoy solar car technology, or would like to see the hand-built solar cars, have a once in a lifetime chance to see the cars up close and talk to the college kids who built them. They are very impressive!
Colleges participating in the American Solar Challenge include University of Kentucky, KU, University of CA - Berkeley, MIT, Principia College and many more. Show your support for students and their amazing inventions and talk to the college kids from all the schools about their hand-built solar cars.
Partnering with the National Park Service, the 2021 American Solar Challenge race route will commemorate the bicentennial of the Santa Fe Trail from Independence, Missouri to Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Qualified teams will make daily stops in communities and national parks along the route. Come see the cars, explore the history and beautiful landscapes of the Santa Fe Trail, and discover solar technology!
National Trails has partnered with the Innovators Educational Foundation to bring the American Solar Challenge to the Santa Fe National Historic Trail.
