Description

Manhattan Project National Historical Park will observe the 79th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan at all three park locations; Hanford, Washington; Los Alamos, New Mexico.; and Oak Ridge, Tennessee from August 6-9, 2024. As part of the observation in Oak Ridge, the park is soliciting luminarias (small paper lanterns) and Messages of Peace from the public. The sunrise bell ringing of the International Friendship Bell in Oak Ridge’s A.K. Bissell Park will be wreathed in luminarias adorned by the community with Messages of Peace.

Locally, the public can contribute to this effort by writing Messages of Peace on luminarias at multiple events in Oak Ridge leading up to the event on August 6, 2024. The park has a booth at the Oak Ridge Farmers’ Market (Jackson Square, 281 Broadway Avenue, Oak Ridge, TN 37830) on July 20, July 27, and August 3 from 8:00-11:00AM ET for children and adults to draw or write their Messages of Peace.
