Description

Join National Park Service Ranger Jerry Hightower for a wonderful meander along the river and the beautiful Cochran Shoals, across the wetland’s boardwalk, and into the rich oak hickory forest. We will explore this beautiful bottomland wetlands and environs as we wander over, around, and in the wetlands, Gunby Creek, and the surrounding forest. It is hard to believe that this was once the Akers Plantation and, in the twentieth century, the horse farm of Judge Eugene Gunby. The forest floor supports a wonderful array of ferns and wildflowers while the soft mud along the stream reveals the visitors from the previous night. This scenic delight is a little known treasure for a morning hike.

Moderately easy, however this walk is not suitable for very young children.

Remember to dress for the weather and wear very comfortable hiking shoes. Dress in layers so that you can adjust to changes in the temperature and your activity level. Bring water and you might bring high energy snacks. You may wish to bring binoculars, hand lens, notebook, and camera.
