Description

Plessy v. Ferguson was a lawsuit that began when a black man (Homer Plessy) boarded the whites only section of  a Louisiana railroad car in 1892 in a carefully planned act of civil disobedience. It ended with the 1896 Supreme Court decision that stated that "separate but equal" was acceptable under the Constitution. Keith Plessy and Phoebe Ferguson, descendants of those involved in the original case,  founded the Plessy and Ferguson Foundation, which works to educate, preserve, and share the long history of Americans' fights to bring liberty and justice to all.
