Description
The Real Shutter Island
Dennis Lehane’s spooky novel of a mental health hospital on an island in Boston Harbor has intrigued readers and inspired a movie. It is a work of fiction – but the islands have indeed housed a number of hospitals from the Burrage Hospital for Crippled Children on Bumpkin to the facilities on Long Island to the “Greek Temple” on Rainsford. This talk separates fact from fiction.
This lecture is part of the Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands Web Lecture Series.

“Shipping Out (East) of Boston: Illustrated Tales of the Boston Harbor Islands”
Stephanie Schorow, the author of East of Boston: Notes from the Harbor Islands, and a long-time fan of FBHI and the islands, will present a series of monthly illustrated talks on aspects of the islands during the summer of 2021, a time in which COVID-19 continues to curtail many public activities.
The talks will draw on Stephanie’s extensive research on the islands, personal experiences, photos, postcards and other artifacts to create lively multi-media presentations, with time for comments and sharing stories.
All the presentations will be recorded and posted on the FBHI website, adding to the anecdotal knowledge of the islands.
Stephanie, the author of seven other books on Boston history, is a much-in-demand speaker on a variety of topics. When she’s not writing, she teaches writing at Lasell College, works for Ariadne Labs in Boston, and maintains her garden. See www.stephanieschorow.com
