Join the National Park Service for the 155th Battle of Fort Stevens Commemoration.
In partnership with the Alliance to the Preserve the Civil War the Defenses of Washington, the special event will feature living history demonstrations, including cannon and musket fire, period music, children activities, lectures by noted historians, and guided-walk from Fort Stevens to Walter Reed National Medical Center, and a dedication and flag-laying at Battleground National Cemetery.
This year's theme focuses on the summer 1864 campaigns: Jubal Early's Raid on Washington, the Federal pursuit of Early culminating in the Battle of Cool Springs, and the 1864 Valley Campaign.
The keynote speaker will be Jonathan A. Noyalas,
Director of the McCormick Civil War Institute at Shenandoah University, who will be discussing the Union Army's attempt to destroy the Confederate force after the Battle of Fort Stevens, culminating in the Battle of Cool Springs.
