Description
New Orleans JAZZ NHP's Song o' the Day:
"The Red Red Robin"
Way back in 1926, when, Al Jolson (“World’s Greatest Entertainer”) sang:
When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob-Bob Bobbin' Along
When the red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin' along, along
There'll be no more sobbin' when he starts throbbin' his old sweet song
Wake up, wake up you sleepy head
Get up, get out of your bed
Cheer up, cheer up the sun is red
Live, love, laugh and be happy
What if I were blue, now I'm walking through, walking through the fields of flowers
Etc….
it made folk feel good. Even now, hearing Richard’s instrumental rendition gets those same Red Robins a-bobbin in our noggins ‘til smiles cannot help but emerge.
You might think that little Dorie Cooper (age 7) understood this when she urged her war-wounded English Uncle to draw her a bird in 1943. Despite melancholy over losing his leg to a land mine, it worked! The exercise cheered him a bit, and soon other soldiers were drawing birds to get a giggle out of Dorie, and lift their spirits, as well.
It became such a phenomenon, that, three years later, when Dorie was struck and killed by a car, “During her funeral, her coffin was filled with drawings of birds made by other soldiers, doctors and nurses from the ward, where her uncle had been.” (anydayguide.com) Since then her birthday (April 8th) is annually celebrated as “Draw a Bird Day”. Try it… for Dorie… and smile… ;o)
