A Visit from Nicholas Cruger
This event has already occurred. This page is provided for reference only.
Come meet Alexander Hamilton's mentor Nicholas Cruger, as portrayed by historian Michael Goudket, at this family event!
A young Hamilton went to work for Cruger at the age of 11, in the counting house of Beekman and Cruger in Caribbean St. Croix. Cruger, a native New Yorker, had been sent to the island to look after the family business. During this program, he will explain trade, politics and what life would have been like for Hamilton, a gifted child who didn’t fit neatly into Caribbean society.
In addition to the discussion, there will be a demonstration of colonial period merchant’s equipment and an explanation of 18th century money. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see their names written in colonial period script with a quill pen.
The program will be offered twice, once at 11:00 a.m. and once at 1:00 p.m.
