POINT REYES STATION, Calif. – On Thursday October 5, the National Park Service (NPS) will remove trash and chemicals from a former illegal marijuana grow site operation near Laguna Trail in Point Reyes National Seashore.
The operation will take place from 11 am to 2 pm. Helicopter activity will be visible from Limantour Road and other nearby areas.
The historic marijuana cultivation site was first reported to park rangers on March 8, 2023. The site is located within the park's 33,373-acre Phillip Burton Wilderness.
That same day, visitor and resource protection rangers were able to remove a pellet rifle and multiple containers of store-bought herbicides and pesticides.
On May 3, the park's trail crew team and 10 other park employees, and members of the Conservation Corps North Bay, hauled approximately ½ ton of debris and removed a dam in a nearby creek. More trash and additional caches of old equipment were found that day.
On September 9, park rangers and trail crew members cleared a 20' x 20' area in preparation for all the trash to be removed by helicopter.
The Visitors are reminded to be aware of their surroundings while recreating in the park, and to pay attention to items that seem unusual. If you discover a grow site, leave the area immediately, and report the location to NPS at the visitor center or call the NPS tip line at 888-653-0009.
