Prince William Forest Park Visitor Center

The visitor center for Prince William Forest Park is located at:

18170 Park Entrance Rd
Triangle, VA 22172

In the visitor center area there is:

  • a parking lot,
  • visitor drop-off area,
  • restroom building,
  • visitor center, and
  • paths connecting these places.

Parking and Drop-Off Area

The parking lot at the visitor center has:

  • 2 van-accessible spaces
  • 40 other parking spaces

Visitors with mobility concerns can be dropped off and picked up in front of the visitor center. The pathway from the drop-off point to the visitor center is:

  • Four feet wide
  • 90 feet long if using the ramp to the left of the doors or 37 feet long if using the four steps directly in front of the doors
  • Paved with mostly level large stones.

Paths

The path between the parking area, visitor center, and restrooms is:

  • At a minimum four feet wide
  • 265 feet long
  • Paved with cement and mostly level.
  • There are some small gaps between the stone paving directly around the visitor center building along the way.

Restrooms

Restrooms are located next to the Visitor Center in a separate building. The restroom building is to the left of the Visitor Center. (See photo above)

The restrooms are:

  • Split into Men and Women.
  • Each restroom has one larger stall intended for wheelchair users. The Women's restroom has one additional small stall and the Men's restroom has an additional standing urinal.
  • The smallest turning radius in the Men’s room is three feet. The approach to the sink is only three feet wide.
  • The smallest turning radius in the Women’s room is three feet. The approach to the sink is only three feet wide.

Water Filling Station

  • Just outside the visitor center near the ramp entrance is a standing water bottle filling station on a concrete pad that is wheelchair accessible
 

Visitor Center Interior

Access

  • There is a cement ramp with wooden railings on the left side of the porch.
  • The ramp is four feet wide and 23 feet long with a gradual level rise.
  • There are painted wooden handrails on either side of the ramp.

Information Desk

  • As you enter the building, immediately to your right will be an information desk.
  • Around the side of the information desk is an area with a lower portion, where you can ask questions of the park staff and pay your entrance fees.
  • The card reader used to pay for entrance fees is detachable so it can be used by someone in a wheelchair.

Exhibits

  • The visitor center features exhibits where you can learn about the history of the area.
  • There is room to navigate around the exhibits in a wheelchair.
  • There are also exhibit signs outside the visitor center that are wheelchair accessible.

Bookstore

  • There is a bookstore and gift shop in the visitor center run by Eastern National Park Association, a non-profit park partner.
  • There is room to navigate around the bookstore.

Pine Grove Picnic Area

Located near the visitor center, this picnic area features a first come, first served picnic pavilion, picnic tables, trailheads for several hiking trails, restrooms, water, fire pits and standing charcoal grills, and a playground.

Paths

The path between the parking area, the picnic area, and the playground is:

  • At a minimum four feet wide
  • 349 feet long from the visitor center parking area to the picnic pavilion and 436 feet long from the Pine Grove parking area to the picnic pavilion.
  • 570 feet long from the visitor center parking area to the playground and 422 feet long from the Pine Grove parking area to the playground.
  • 210 feet long from both parking areas to the bathroom.
  • Paved with cement and mostly level.

Restrooms

There is a restroom building located in the center of the picnic area. The restrooms are:

  • Split into Men and Women
  • The Women's restroom has two regular stalls and one larger stall intended for wheelchair users. The Men's restroom has one regular stall, one larger stall intended for wheelchair users, and two standing urinals.
  • The smallest turning radius in both restrooms is four feet with a wide approach to the sinks.
  • Child-sized changing tables are available in both the Men's and Women's restrooms.

Picnic Tables

There are seven wheelchair-accessible picnic tables in the picnic area under the pavilion and one wheelchair-accessible picnic table on a concrete pad outside the pavilion. Some of the accessible tables are also in the surrounding area on the grass. There are two fire rings in this area surrounded by dirt and multiple standing charcoal grills in the dirt and grass.

Drinking Water

There is water available nearby from three single-level drinking fountains, one of which is near a concrete pad. There is also a hand pump water spigot in the grass near the picnic pavilion.

Playground

Currently the playground area is under a major renovation. When completed it will be fully accessible for those in wheelchairs. The playground currently includes climbing structures, slides, and swings on an uneven packed dirt surface.

Piedmont Forest Trail

Located across from the Pine Grove Picnic Area, the Piedmont Forest Trail is a 0.2 mile loop with a mostly flat surface comprised of recycled tire rubber. The grade of the trail varies, with the left side of the loop providing a gentler grade than the right. The trail width also varies but is generally four feet or wider. Halfway down the trail is a large wooden observation deck with benches for sitting. Wayside signs along the trail descuss the different animals of the forest.

Telegraph Picnic Area

Located a half mile down the road from the visitor center, Telegraph Picnic Pavilion can be reserved on recreation.gov. The area features a covered picnic pavilion, restrooms, water spigot, picnic tables, standing charcoal grills, and trailheads for hiking trails.

Parking

There is one van-accessible parking space at the Telegraph Picnic Area and well as one additional handicapped accessible parking space. There are around 73 other parking spaces nearby.

Paths

There is one accessible path from the parking area to the restrooms and the picnic pavilion. This path is:

  • Paved with stone pavers

  • 134 feet from the parking area to the restroom

  • 168 feet from the parking area to the picnic pavilion

  • Mostly flat with a slight grade

Restrooms

There is a restroom building to the right (south) of the picnic pavilion. It is:

  • Split into Men and Women.

  • Each restroom has one larger stall intended for wheelchair users. The women's restroom has one addition small stall and the men's restroom has a standing urinal.

  • There is a partial wall on the outside of the restroom restricting the entrance width. The path to the entrance is three feet wide.

  • To enter the Men’s and Women’s restrooms there is a three feet turning radius.

  • The smallest turning radius in both the Men's and Women's restrooms is three feet.

  • One child-sized changing table is available in both the Men's resroom, and the Women’s restroom.

Picnic Tables

There are four wheelchair-accessible picnic tables in the picnic area under the pavilion. Other accessible picnic tables are located down a short, steep grass and dirt hill from the parking area.

There are no fire rings in this area although there are several standing charcoal grills.

Drinking Water

There is water available nearby from a pump spigot near the pavilion.

 

Scenic Drive

The park's 12 mile Scenic Drive through the forest includes a three-mile long designated lane for walkers, runners, and bicyclists. This three-mile section is separated from the vehicle lane and is paved. The grade of the lane is mostly flat and the width of this lane is six feet. The three-mile lane begins at Parking Lot D along the Scenic Drive.

Oak Ridge Campground

Oak Ridge Campground is located at:

6975 Oak Ridge Rd.
Triangle, VA 22172

The Oak Ridge Campground features 100 reservable campsites for tents and smaller RVs. There are three loops in the campground: A, B, and C. Each loop has restrooms including sinks and flush toliets. The restrooms in the B loop have showers. Each site has a picnic table, parking spot, grill/fire pit, and lantern post. Campsites must be reserved on recreation.gov.

There are sites in each loop that may work for campers with mobility concerns. The following sites are mostly level, have van-accessible parking, have an accessible grill/fire pit, and an accessible picnic table:

There are three restrooms in the campground (one in each of the campground loops). The restrooms are:

  • Split into Men’s and Women’s rooms.

  • A and C Loop restrooms have 2 larger toilet stalls with 34 inch entrances. There is a four inch step to enter both of these restrooms.

  • B Loop restroom has 2 toilet stalls and 1 larger stall intended for wheelchair users. B Loop restrooms also have 2 shower stall and 1 larger shower stall intended for wheelchair users.

  • There is a partial wall on the outside of the restroom restricting the entrance width. The path to the entrance is four feet wide or more. B and C Loop restrooms have paved paths to them, while A Loop restrooms are accessed from a dirt path.

  • The smallest turning radius inside the Men's and Women's restroom for all the loops is 32 inches.

  • There are changing tables in both the Men's and Women's restroom in A Loop only.

Amphitheater

There is a small amphitheater near Loop A. A wide crushed gravel path leads to benchs arranged in front of a white screen. The path to the ampitheater is four feet wide or more, and the ampitheater is 767 feet from the campground roadway. Currently this area is not being used for ranger programs or activities.

Turkey Run Ridge Group Campground

Turkey Run Ridge Group Campground is located at:

5475 Turkey Run Rd.

The Turkey Run Ridge Group Campground has 9 group sites available by reservation on recreation.gov. The campground also features:

  • Restrooms and flush toilets (no showers)

  • Water spigots and water fountains

  • An amphitheater

Campsites

Campsite E or Campsite H are the most accessible for those with mobility concerns and are located near the restrooms. The sites includes several picnic tables, a grill/fire ring, nearby accessible parking, and ample room for multiple tents.

The site is:

  • Mostly level with a compacted dirt surface (May have roots and rocks in places)
  • Bordered by 4x4 wooden boards

Restrooms

There are two restroom buildings in the campground. One restroom is near campsites A-E and the other restroom is near sites F-I. The restroom near Site H has push assist entrance doorways and is located 121 feet down a paved walkway from the main parking area at the end of Turkey Run Road behind the Resource Management building.

The other restroom is located in the campground loop. From Site E, this restroom is down a path from the parking area that is:

  • At the narrowest, two and a half feet wide

  • 138 feet long

  • Roughly paved

Both restrooms are:

  • Split into Men and Women.

  • Each restroom has 2 stalls and 1 larger stall intended for wheelchair users.

  • The smallest turning radius in the Men’s room is 32 inches.

  • The smallest turning radius in the Women’s room is 32 inches.

Water Spigot

There are two water spigots in the campground located near the two restrooms. Path to the water spigot are unpaved dirt and mostly level. The water spigot is a pump handle style and sits on a cement platform. There is a six inch difference between the platform and the nearby ground.

Amphitheater

The amphitheater has wooden bench seating around a large fire pit. The benches are set on sloped hill. The amphitheater is reserved through recreation.gov.

The path to the amphitheater from the large parking area is:

  • 1,021 feet long

  • Slightly sloping and not signed

  • Six feet wide or more

  • Rough terrain with rocks, tree roots, and other natural obstructions

The RV campground is located at:

The campground is run by a concessionaire and has RV hookups (full and partial). Reservations can be made at: https://www.princewilliamforestrvcampground.com/index.htm

Checking in / Camp Store

The building for checking in is located to the right as you pull into the RV campground. The building is small and there is not much room inside to maneuver.

This building also houses a small selection of goods for sale.

RV sites

The campground has a mix of pull-through and back-in sites. Some sites have full hookups (water, sewer, electric) while others are only offer water and electric hookups.

The sites are:

  • Mostly level

  • Paved

Pool

There is a swimming pool on site that is open to RV campground users. There is a single entrance gate to the pool area located on the southeast corner of the fence. There is an ADA compliant pool lift chair available for use. There are some lounge-style deck chairs around the pool.

Cabin Camp 1 is the most accessible Cabin Camp for campers in wheelchairs. Sleeping cabins in D Unit have wooden ramps, and a paved path leads between the cabins, restrooms, craft lodge, and dining hall.

Cabin Camp #1

Cabin Camp 1 (also known as Camp Goodwill) is located at:

16450 Pleasant Rd.
Dumfries, VA 22025

Within Cabin Camp 1 there are cabins, a dining hall, restrooms, picnic areas, and craft lodges. The cabins in Cabin Camp 1 are historic and are reservable by filling out an application.

Cabins

  • There are 48 cabins. The Dining Hall, Building 55 Craft Lodge, and all the cabins in D Unit (8 sleeping cabins and a craft lodge) have ramps. The doorways into the D Unit have a minimum width of three feet.
  • The interior of cabins in D Unit have:
    • Two bunk beds
    • Outlets and an electric light
    • No running water
    • No bathroom
  • The other cabins in Cabin Camp 1 do not have a ramp leading to the doorway. The doorway and interior features are otherwise similar to the other cabins.

Restrooms

The restrooms are in a separate building.

From sleeping cabins, the restroom in D Unit is down a path that is:

  • At the narrowest, three feet wide
  • 130 feet long or longer depending on the cabin
  • Roughly paved and gravel at times with a gentle slope

The restrooms are:

  • Split into Men and Women.
  • Each restroom has 2 toilet stalls and 1 larger stall intended for wheelchair users as well as 2 shower stalls and 1 larger shower stall for wheelchair users.
  • The smallest turning radius in the Men’s room is 32 inches.
  • The smallest turning radius in the Women’s room is 32 inches.

Dining Hall

The dining hall and kitchen are in a separate building. The path to the dining hall is:

  • At the narrowest, four feet wide
  • 415 feet long from the D Unit cabins
  • Rougly paved and gravel with root bumps at times

Entering the dining hall in a wheelchair is possible through the west entrance by way of a ramp. The kitchen is not currently wheelchair-accessible.

Cabin Camp #2

Cabin Camp 2 (also known as Camp Mawavi) is located at:

Within Cabin Camp 2 there are cabins, a dining hall, restrooms, picnic areas, and craft lodges. The cabins in Cabin Camp 2 are historic and are reservable by filling out an application.

Cabins

  • There are 49 cabins. None of them have ramps and most have one to six steps to enter the buildings. The narrowest doorway into any of the cabins has a minimum width of three feet.
  • The interior of the sleeping cabins have:
    • Two to six beds
    • Electric lights and outlets
    • Porches
    • No running water
    • No bathroom

Restrooms

The restrooms for the sleeping cabins are in separate buildings.

From the cabins, the restrooms are down paths that are:

  • At the narrowest, two feet wide but often open grassy areas
  • At most 200 feet long
  • Unpaved, lined with stones, and rough terrain at times

The restrooms are:

  • Split into Men and Women.
  • Contain showers
  • Each restroom has several stalls.
  • The smallest turning radius in the Men’s room is two feet.
  • The smallest turning radius in the Women’s room is two feet.

Dining Hall

The dining hall and kitchen are in a separate building. The path to the dining hall from the parking area is:

  • An unpaved gravel road
  • At least six feet wide

Entering the dining hall requires ascending three to six steps. The kitchen is not currently wheelchair-accessible.

Cabin Camp #3

Cabin Camp 3 (also known as Camp Orenda) is located at:

Within Cabin Camp 3 there are individual cabins as well as group cabins, a dining hall, restrooms, picnic areas, and craft lodges. All the cabins in Cabin Camp 3 are historic and individual cabins are reservable on recreation.gov while the group cabin camp can be reserved by filling out an application.

Group Cabins

  • There are 13 cabins in the group side of Cabin Camp 3. The dining hall has a ramp, though the other cabins have stairs to access them. The doorways into the cabins have a minimum width of three feet.
  • The interior of the cabins have:
    • 2-10 beds
    • Outlets and electric lights
    • No running water
    • No bathroom

Individual Cabins

  • There are 12 individualy rented cabins located in A and B Units. None of them have ramps, and all require one to two steps to access them.
  • From the parking area, cabins can be accessed by walking down a gravel road at least six feet wide that is steeply sloped in places.
  • All the cabins have electricity and fans as well as a standing charcoal grill and picnic table in front of them.
  • No running water or bathrooms

Restrooms

The restrooms for both the individual and group rental cabins are in a separate building. From the sleeping cabins, the restroom is down a path that is wide, unpaved gravel and dirt road that is rough at times.

The restrooms are:

  • Split into Men and Women.
  • Each restroom has toilet stalls and shower stalls
  • The smallest turning radius in the Men’s room is 32 inches.
  • The smallest turning radius in the Women’s room is 32 inches.

Dining Hall

The dining hall and kitchen are in a separate building. The path to the dining hall is:

  • At the narrowest, four feet wide
  • Unpaved gravel/dirt/grass with roots and rough terrain at times

Entering the dining hall in a wheelchair is possible through a wooden ramp on the porch at the front of the building with a wooden railing. The kitchen is not currently wheelchair-accessible.

Cabin Camp #4

Cabin Camp 4 (also known as Camp Pleasant) is located at:

Within Cabin Camp 4 there are cabins, a dining hall, restrooms, picnic areas, and craft lodges. The cabins in Cabin Camp 4 are historic and are reservable by filling out an application.

Cabins

  • There are 33 cabins. The only cabin with a ramp entrance is the theater building near the parking area. All other cabins require 1-4 steps to enter them.

  • The interior of the sleeping cabins have:

    • Beds

    • Electric outlets and lights

    • No running water

    • No bathroom

    • None of the sleeping cabins or the dining hall have a ramp leading to the doorway.

Restrooms

The restrooms are in a separate building for most of the sleeping cabins with the exception of the infirmary.

The restroom is down a path that is:

  • Gravel/dirt/grass with roots and rough terrain at times

  • 100 feet or more from the sleeping cabins

  • Four feet wide or more

The restrooms are:

  • Split into Men and Women.

  • Each restroom has toilets stalls and shower stalls with a narrow turning radius at times

Dining Hall

The dining hall and kitchen are in a separate building. The path to the dining hall is:

  • At the narrowest, four feet wide

  • An unpaved gravel road and rough terrain at times

Entering the dining hall require ascending 1 to 5 steps. The kitchen is not currently wheelchair-accessible.

Cabin Camp #5

Cabin Camp 5 (also known as Camp Happyland) is located at:

Within Cabin Camp 5 there are cabins, a dining hall, restrooms, picnic areas, craft lodges, and a pavilion. The cabins in Cabin Camp 5 are historic and are reservable by filling out an application.

Cabins

  • There are 31 cabins. The dining hall and infirmary building have ramps. The doorway into these building have a minimum width of 32 inches.

  • The interior of the sleeping cabins have:

    • Beds

    • Electric outlets and lights

    • No running water

    • No bathroom

  • The other cabins in Cabin Camp 5 do not have a ramp leading to the doorway. The interior features are otherwise similar to the other cabins.

Restrooms

The restrooms and showers are in a separate building for most of the sleeping cabins with the exception of the infirmary and larger bunkhouse buildings that are heated for winter as well as summer use.

From the sleeping cabins, the restroom is down a path that is:

  • 100 feet long or longer
  • Unpaved gravel/grass/dirt with roots and rough terrain at times

The restrooms are:

  • Split into Men and Women.
  • Each restroom has bathroom stalls and shower stalls and a narrow turning radius at times.

Dining Hall

The dining hall and kitchen are in a separate building. The path to the dining hall is:

  • At the narrowest, four feet wide
  • Around 200 feet long and mostly level
  • Paved with boards from the gravel pavilion parking to the dining hall

Entering the dining hall in a wheelchair is possible through the south entrance by way of a ramp. The kitchen is not currently wheelchair-accessible.
