Parking at Howland Hill Road Trailhead

  • Howland Hill Road will be closed Monday through Friday beginning on May 10 for at least three weeks. The road will close on Sunday in the late afternoon or early evening and will not reopen until Friday late afternoon or evening (dependent on staffing). Due to this road work/closure you won’t be able to access the trailhead/parking area for Little Bald Hills. There are two parking options with this road closed, one will be outside of the locked gate on Howland Hill Road (on the east side, by taking the turn off of Hwy 199). Please park clear off of the road and do not block the gate. Maintenance and emergency traffic still need to be able to pass through the locked gate.

The other parking area is located further down South Fork Road in the National Forest Service – Smith River National Recreation Area from the Paradise Trailhead/Sand Camp (milepost 7.6). Parking here will make your hike into the backcountry site a 6-mile one-way hike.

  • The parking area is located off Howland Hill Road in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, watch for the sign Little Bald Hills Trailhead and follow the short gravel road up. PLEASE remember to lock your vehicle, take valuables with you, and leave nothing in sight.
  • It is a 3-mile hike into this camp from where you park your vehicle.
