National Park Service to Commemorate Memorial Day at Fort Harrison National Cemetery

RICHMOND, Va.—Richmond National Battlefield Park, in cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs, is sponsoring a Memorial Day program and wreath-laying to honor and remember those who have died in our nation’s service. This annual event will take place on Monday, May 27 at 12 p.m. at the Fort Harrison National Cemetery, located at 8620 Varina Road.   The event is free and open to the public.

This year’s keynote speaker is Captain Howard L. Baugh (retired), a veteran who served his country in the U.S. Air Force, including two tours in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. As president of the Howard Baugh Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Captain Baugh continues to honor the legacy of his father, Lieutenant Colonel Howard Baugh, a Tuskegee Airman and decorated pilot who flew 135 combat missions during World War II. The organization introduces youth to aviation and science, provides educational assistance to students, and inspires them to give back to their communities. Following his talk, a wreath will be laid at the grave of Private George A. Buchanan, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fort Harrison. Special music will be provided by the Varina Community Choir.
