The Purchase Knob Field Station was donated to Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) in 2001. Researchers have two options for overnight accommodations when they visit GSMNP.

  1. Indoor Accommodations: The Purchase Knob Field Station has three bedrooms with 10-bed spaces, a shared bathroom, a full kitchen, internet access, and laundry facilities. Researchers should bring their own linens. The field station can be reserved for $15.00 per person each night.

  1. Outdoor Accommodations: The Purchase Knob Field Station has 5 tent platforms that can be reserved by researchers. This option only has access to an outdoor restroom with flushable toilets. Researchers should bring their own tents, sleeping bags, and linens. Tent platforms can be reserved for $5 per person each night.

Researchers can request to use a small lab and 50-person conference room during their stay at the Purchase Knob Field Station. Researchers with valid NPS research permits can request use of the facility from the Research Coordinator, (828) 926-6251. The Purchase Knob Field Station opens in early May and closes in early November.
