Sea chanteys come to the Claremont Branch Library in Berkeley! Join a National Park Service Ranger for this family-friendly 45-minute program to discover the work songs of merchant seamen, fishermen, oarsmen and longshoremen. Connect with your maritime heritage, and learn the historical background to each song. Chanteys helped set rhythm, and relieved some of the back-breaking and monotonous jobs aboard ships and rowing craft. These compelling songs come from many traditions, including: African American, Anglo American, British, Caribbean, and French. Audience members will be encouraged to sing along on the choruses, which are easy to pick up.
