Update: Site Observation Update Week April 21th

This week weather was at times good, and similarly challenging, but with the option to work under cover and outside, good progress continued. Water Resistant Barrier (WRB) Installation continues on all elevations, while metal flashing work started at window penetrations. Plumbing rough-in work within mechanical and rest room locations has begun as well. Concrete pours for the Interpretative Plaza pathway and reinforced circular depressed slab to support pig sculpture proceeded.

It’s important to note that all crew members are employing all those health and safety measure that we are all practicing, including social distancing. Work crew members are being monitored regularly, and sanitation facilities are available for the crew. While the project is certainly important, the health and safety of employees and workers is much more important.

Front elevation showing wrapping and flashing installation continuing
(A) Water resistant barrier continues to be installed. Making sure that the fit is right, and that seams are fully closed, is very important.

Concrete being poured for installation of brass pig
(B) The reinforced concrete circle in the plaza that will host the bronze pig was poured, and finished in preparation for blasting and curing. We expect the pig to be a public favorite, and one focal point for the finished project for many years to come.

Worker finishing concrete on interpretive walkway
(C) Finishing touches are applied to the flatwork on the plaza walkway.
In photo (D), you can see the retarder, applied to the cement, produces a sandblasted finish with a blue tint as it cures.

Retarder on concrete causes it to turn blue while curing

South elevation showing window and flashing installation
(E) Here, the South elevation windows receive flashing.

(F) Flashing around windows and framing is a great way to maintain momentum on rainy days.

Interior view of vestibule and eagle window
(G) Looking from the southeast interior we see the vestibule framing continuing, and high above, the eagle view circular window complete. Every indication is that the construction has not interupted the Bald Eagles which have blessed the visitor center area for many years. The Eagle Window will be one way visitors can keep an eagle eye on our eagles.

(H) Framework for the steps from the lower parking lot to the upper is ready to receive concrete.

Roughed-in plumbing for restroom inside framing
(I) In the interior spaces which will host restrooms rough-in plumbing proceeds.
