Get Ready for the Great Salem Maritime Cardboard Boat Regatta!!!
SALEM, MA –Salem Maritime National Historic Site invites all to share in our growing excitement for the triumphant return of the Salem Merry-time Fest being held this Saturday, August 19, 12 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a mix of boats, music, a magician and free fun for all ages. To this tradition, we are proud to add the first Great Salem Maritime Cardboard Boat Regatta! This truly historic moment will complement the city of Salem’s important maritime history and traditions, and is sure to be a memorable event! The event is located at 160 Derby Street in Salem.
Twenty-five teams of two have registered to compete in the regatta. These include many community members and local icons such as the Essex National Heritage Commission, the House of the Seven Gables, the Salem Partnership, and the Peabody Essex Museum, all vying for a one-of-a-kind trophy. Trophies named after significant mariners and vessels will be awarded for speed, artistry, engineering, and even the most spectacular sinkings. This is quite possibly one of the only sporting events that celebrates participants equally for both their incredible achievement and their incredible failure.
Because the tide waits for no one, the regatta will kick off at 1:00 p.m. sharp with the traditional singing of a sea shanty. Five boats at a time will race in a series of heats testing the cardboard vessels and their fearless crews. Surviving seaworthy boats will then be able to compete in a final heat for the coveted Beagle Trophy. Salem Main Streets will provide real-time commentary during the regatta. Immediately after, an awards ceremony will take place on the beach. This is an event not to be missed!
