From April 1 through April 10, 2022, Shiloh National Military Park commemorated the 160th anniversary with real-time ranger hikes, car caravan tours, artillery demonstrations, and large pre-pandemic size crowds. “After two years of subdued and canceled programming, the rangers were excited to be back on the battlefield presenting historical tours and demonstrations to the public again; it is what they do,” said Superintendent Allen Etheridge.
On April 1 - 3, a 160th reenactment, hosted by a group not affiliated with Shiloh, took place just off the battlefield’s boundary. Overflow visitation from this event brought more than 1,900 visitors to the battlefield over the three days. In addition, seventy-six Junior Rangers were sworn in by Shiloh rangers.
From April 6 – 8, Shiloh rangers provided real-time guided hikes and accessible car caravan tours of the battle. “The hikes offer visitors a deeper understanding of what occurred during the fierce fighting between the Northern and Southern soldiers and provide rare opportunities for visitors to access park personnel for extended periods of time on the battlefield,” said Etheridge. Although crowd size was still limited for each hike, 644 people participated in these guided tours, which surpassed last year’s numbers by over 100.
On April 9 and 10, the Shiloh Cannon Crew was assisted by volunteer and NPS personnel from Fort Donelson National Battlefield, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, Stones River National Battlefield, and Parkers Crossroads Battlefield, which is a new affiliated NPS site. The artillery detachments provided seven firing demonstrations using four reproduction 6-pounder field pieces representing a Confederate battery in the Battle of Shiloh. A total of 1,177 people attended the two days of artillery firing demonstrations. The park also accumulated more than 550 hours of volunteer service during the demonstrations.
During the 160th anniversary, between April 1 and April 10, around 6,200 people visited both the Shiloh and Corinth battlefields. This was the first signature event at Shiloh National Military Park for 2022. Upcoming signature park events will include Memorial Day weekend at Shiloh, July 4th cannon firing demonstrations, the NPS Birthday Bash Concert in August, the Corinth 160th battle anniversary events, and Wreaths Across America and illumination in the Shiloh National Cemetery.
